Duck Species

This is a story of conservation as told through the natural histories of two of the world's most beautiful and fascinating birds. Of the more than one hundred species of ducks in the world, the Wood Duck of North America and the Mandarin of Asia are among the most magnificent in appearance and the most remarkable in behavior. The only two species in their genus, these two Northern Wood Ducks breed, nest, and winter in the northern hemisphere, seeking out protective forests, quiet rivers, and secluded lakes. Laysan Duck - The Laysan Duck, Anas laysanensis, is a dabbling duck which is nowadays endemic to Laysan Island, Hawaii. This duck is related to the Mallard, and has sometimes been considered to be an island race of that species.

Pink-eared Duck - The Pink-eared Duck, (Malacorhynchus membranaceus) is a species of duck found in Australia. It is the only living member of the genus Malacorhynchus; a closely related, but slightly larger extinct form from New Zealand was described as Scarlett's Duck (Malacorhynchus scarletti).

Mud Duck - "Mud Duck" is a derogatory term used by people in Wisconsin, Iowa and North Dakota to describe residents of Minnesota. The term appears to be a play on the Minnesota nickname of "Land of Ten Thousand Lakes" and the notion of a species of duck that tends to feed on the muck of the bottom of a lake as well as the unclean and raucous habits of ducks generally.

White-winged Wood Duck - The White-winged Wood Duck (Cairina scutulata) is a species of dabbling duck in the genus Cairina. Historically it was widely distributed from north-east India and Bangladesh, through South East Asia to Java and Sumatra.
